Sports Injury
Looking to Rehab or Prevent a Sports Injury?
Injury is never welcomed but it is a well-known risk in sports of all kinds. Most injuries, however, are easily treatable and preventable through a comprehensive physical therapy treatment plan.
Below are the findings of a comprehensive study published in the National Health Statistics Report (November 18, 2016) titled: "Sports and Recreation-Related Injury Episodes in the United States, 2011-2014" by: Yahtyng Sheu, Ph.D., Li-Hui Chen, Ph.D., and Holly Hedegaard, M.D.
- Most of the documented injury episodes (65%) involved individuals aged 5-24 years, with the highest rate registered by children 5-14.
- A little over one-third of all injuries - an estimated 2.9 million injuries annually - occurred at a "sports facility, athletic field, or playground."
- Injuries were commonly reported during:
- "General Exercise"
- Including running and resistance training
- Basketball
- Football
- Soccer
- Gymnastics/Cheerleading
- Tennis
- Golf
- Cycling
- Baseball
- Water Sports
- "General Exercise"
The highest percentage of injuries reported were related to a fall, followed by overexertion.
Both of these causes of injury could be effectively prevented as well as treated with physical therapy.
Sprains and strains accounted for the largest portion of injuries.
A sprain involves over-stretching or tearing a ligament. A strain is the same but for a tendon or muscle. Both sprains and strains can be significantly reduced with physical therapy.
The most frequently injured area of the body was the lower extremities (hip/knee/ankle/foot), followed by upper extremities (shoulder/elbow/wrist/hand), head/neck and then the trunk (lower back/abdominals).
